A Straightforward Approach to Mental Health

Exercise and depression

Our approach to adult mental health is straightforward.

We talk to the people who know best – the people who’ve had mental health problems and experienced mental health services.

“When I left the gym that morning I felt as if someone had given me a million pounds. It was the sense of achievement, the fact that I’d been able to do some work in a gym, and that…I also had something to work
towards – a goal.”

From this we learn about the things that help people in their everyday lives and what mental health services need to do to put their patients’ needs first.

Without question what most people want to know from us is “how can I help myself?” Our information is designed around what people have told us.

For example, for the last three years we have been raising awareness that exercise can be an excellent therapy for someone with depression. Up and running? is our leaflet about how to access this therapy.

It is often underprescribed by GPs, but things are changing. Our latest research shows that GPs have seen a marked increase in the number of people asking them about exercise therapy for depression, and many more GPs are prescribing it since we started the campaign.
