Highlighting Mental Health in Later Life

Troubled man
Many of the issues affecting the mental health of people in later life are the same as those for adults of working age – yet older people’s mental health is often overlooked.

We have identified five main factors that can all contribute to poor mental health in later life:

  • Lack of meaningful activity
  • Loss of contact with friends
  • Poor physical health
  • Age discrimination
  • Poverty

Depression is the most common mental health problem in later life, however it frequently goes undiagnosed. We are helping individuals to overcome the barriers to good mental health in later life.

We’re also helping health professionals recognise mental health problems and pushing for improved access to support and treatment.

Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease are also priority areas. To improve the services available to older people, we are making grants to care homes that want to offer innovative ways of supporting people with dementia and their families.
