Boiling Point - A campaign on anger and mental health

We all get angry. Anger is one of the most basic human emotions. It is a physical and mental response to a threat or something that has already happened.

Anger takes many different forms from irritation to blinding rage or resentment that festers over many years. Anger is different for each of us.

Anger is necessary to our survival as individuals and in communities. But it can do harm to individual health and wellbeing and it can occasionally contribute to violence and tragedy.

Most of us deal with anger in a healthy way. But for some of us anger can sometimes become a problem. Even if you don't always express anger, it doesn't mean you don't feel it.

Problem anger has been linked to a range of physical, mental health and social problems.

Don't let anger get the better of you...

This year, we have released a report showing that problem anger is left untackled in the UK despite being linked to:

  • aggression

  • family breakdown

  • physical and mental health problems

Anger is a vital emotion, and essential to our survival, but it can become entrenched in everyday life for some people, interfering with their thinking, feeling and behaviour and creating misery for themselves and others. Read the press release.

Our report says that problem anger is not a mental illness in itself, but many of the everyday tools used in mental health - such as talking therapies - can be applied to help people cope better with anger.

The area of anger has been neglected by researchers, clinicians and policy makers. Consequently people who might benefit enormously from learning how to manage their anger better are not encouraged to come forward, or when they do, they may be offered little or nothing in the way of useful support.

The Boiling Point report carries a series of recommendations for research, education and service development work in this neglected area. Read the report.

An Early Day Motion was put down in the House of Commons in support of this campaign. You can ask your local MP to sign this Early Day Motion. It will only take a couple of minutes, but will make a big difference! Find out how.

We are also running a year-long public awareness campaign to encourage people to learn to cope better with anger.

As part of the public awareness campaign, you can:
