Top tips for healthy eating

 

Eating

 

  • Try to cook meals from scratch – it can actually be much cheaper than buying pre-packed or processed foods.

  • Try to wash and peel fruit and vegetables that are not organic. Organic fruit and vegetables just need washing.
     

Shopping

 

  • Try to purchase foods in ethnic shops and local markets, which are often cheaper than supermarkets, if you want to save money on fresh produce.

  • Look out for fruit and vegetables that are in season. It is much tastier – keep your eye out for special offers.

  • Try to buy organic foods if you can afford to and have access to them. But if you can’t, perhaps eat organic foods once a week as a treat.

  • Try to stock up on healthy snack foods such as fruit, raw vegetables and nuts.

  • Try to make sure you’re not hungry when you go food shopping – you may be encouraged to buy foods that are not nutritious.  

 
Eating

 

  • Try to avoid adding salt and sugar to food and drinks for a trial period - you get used to it very quickly, and many people never go back to adding it.

  • Try to eat meals that are made from fresh ingredients. Processed and refined foods are typically high in salt, sugar, saturated fat, trans-fats, chemicals, additives and preservatives and low in nutrients.

  • Try to eat your five portions of fruit and vegetables every day – they are good sources of antioxidants, and vitamins and minerals, which are beneficial for your health and immune system.

  • Try to eat fresh oily fish such as mackerel, sardines, tuna or salmon.

  • Try to avoid eating takeaways, ready meals and processed foods which are full of salt, sugar and additives.

  • Try to think about your week ahead and plan evening meals in advance. It can save you time and helps to make healthy eating easier and more interesting. It can also help you to save money.

  • Try to make your own lunch a few times a week if you work outside of home. It is often cheaper than buying lunch and it gives you more control over what you are eating.
