Friendship and Mental Health

Mental Health Action Week 2007

Each year the Mental Health Foundation uses Mental Health Action Week to raise awareness of mental health issues across the country.

In 2007 we raised awareness about the importance of friendship and its positive impact on mental health.

Friendships are vital for good mental health. But our new research reveals that in reality it can be difficult for people with mental health problems to maintain their friendships. It can also be tough for friends of people with mental health problems to know how to support them.

We have created a series of posters and a booklet which offers help and guidance to people with mental health problems and their friends.

  • Share your experiences of the impact of your friendships on your mental health on the discussion board below

Make a donation in honour of your friend

If you have a friend who has supported you through difficult times, why not celebrate your friendship by making a donation in their honour.

You can even leave a personal message* for your friend whilst donating.

  • £10 could pay for 50 friendship booklets to be sent to people who need them

  • £25 could pay to find someone’s personal story for a media campaign to improve awareness of mental health
