A Future Vision for Mental Health

Future vision for mental health front page

2009 is a crucial year for mental health policy in England.

The Government’s 10 year plan for mental health – the National Service Framework for Mental Health – comes to an end in 2009.

In its place, the Government has established a ‘New Horizons’ programme, to develop ideas about mental health policy for the next 10 years.

As a contribution to this debate, a Coalition of 11 national mental health organisations, including the Mental Health Foundation, published on 7 July 2009 a new vision for mental health.

The vision will ensure that the achievements of the National Service Framework are built on, and that future policy focuses not only on improving the care and support given to people with mental health problems, but also on the mental well-being of the whole population.

The paper sets out 4 key principles for mental health policy:

  1. mental health and well-being is everybody’s business, and needs coordinated action across all levels of government

  2. we need to promote positive mental health, prevent mental illness and intervene early when people become unwell

  3. people should get whatever support they need from mental health services to help them recover and gain a good quality of life

  4. service users, carers and communities should take an active role in shaping the support available to them
