Self-help strategies
A healthy lifestyle can help people maintain good mental health. Changes to diet, exercise levels and alcohol consumption can help protect people from mental health problems or aid the recovery of people experiencing mental distress. Talking about your feelings and keeping in touch with friends and family can also be beneficial. Some people with mental health problems find other ways to manage their distress.
Talking therapies
Talking therapies (also called psychological treatments) include counselling, cognitive behavioural therapy and psychoanalysis.
Medication
Medication is the most common treatment provided to people with mental health problems. It usually forms either a short course of treatment or is used long-term to help people live with enduring problems.
Self-management
