Look after your mental health at work, urges leading charity

News Release, 20 February 2002

Stressed out? During Mental Health Action Week (31 March to 7 April 2002), take a moment out from your busy working day to gauge your stress levels and find out what you can do to look after your own mental health with the Mental Health Foundation's webquiz.

Stress is estimated to cost industry and business over £3bn a year. 91 million working days a year are lost to mental ill health and nearly three in ten employees will have a mental health problem in any one year - yet very few companies have an official policy on mental health.

"Mental health is a part of each and every one of us," said Ruth Lesirge, chief executive, Mental Health Foundation. "But although many people are careful about what they eat and drink and how much exercise they take, how many of us stop to check our mental health - particularly during a working day."

With one in four people experiencing some form of mental health problem in any one year, the Mental Health Foundation will be launching a report into the experiences of people with mental health problems within the workplace on Tuesday 2 April 2002 during Mental Health Action Week.
