Mental Health Foundation Appoints New Chief Executive

News Release, 5 August 2002

The Mental Health Foundation today named Andrew McCulloch as its next Chief Executive. Dr McCulloch was appointed for his extensive background in mental health and excellent reputation in the field.

Prior to his appointment, McCulloch has been Director of Policy at The Sainsbury Centre for Mental Health for 6 years and contributed to a number of key reports and projects including Keys to Engagement, Acute Problems, Finding and Keeping, Pulling Together and Breaking the Circles of Fear. Andrew was also a senior civil servant in the Department of Health for 16 years and was responsible for mental health and learning disabilities policy from 1992 to 1996.

Current Chief Executive Ruth Lesirge is due to leave the Foundation on 31 August, after three years in post. Lesirge said: "I'm delighted by this appointment. Over the last few years we have demonstrated the cutting edge contribution we can make to the world of mental health and learning disabilities. Andrew is well respected, and will be able to lead the Foundation to the next stage in its development."

Dr McCulloch said "I am very excited to be leading the Mental Health Foundation at this critical time in the development of mental health and learning disability services. We have a window of opportunity now that will not recur for many years. I am keen that the Foundation plays a significant role in creating new opportunities for service users."
