Mental Health Action Week: 11 - 17 April 2004

The state of Britain's relationships today

News Release, 11 December 2003

The Mental Health Foundation is calling on people of all ages across the UK, to take part in what it hopes will be the largest online survey into our relationships to date. The results will help the charity to find out what makes our relationships healthy and how they can help protect our mental health, for its annual Mental Health Action Week.

Mental Health Action Week 2004, organised by the Mental Health Foundation, will take place from Sunday 11th to Saturday 17th April 2004. On Tuesday 13th April the Foundation will launch a major report including the survey results, examining the state of relationships in the UK and how they affect the population's mental health.

The questionnaire can be filled in at www.mentalhealth.org.uk/campaigns/mhaw/ and should be filled in by 19th January 2004.

Dr Andrew McCulloch, Chief Executive of the Mental Health Foundation said: "Relationships have a strong influence on how we feel about ourselves - positive ones can make us feel confident and happy, but destructive or poor relationships or ones that break down can lead to mental health problems for many."

"We know that relationships, whether with friends, partners or family, can help protect our mental health, making us feel valued and secure. But more evidence is needed on how Britain manages its relationships - are we supportive and non-judgmental as a nation, do we have too many or too few and who are our closest and most supportive relationships with? What factors make our relationships good or bad? Our report will help us find the answers to the most crucial questions facing Britain's relationships and how they will impact on its future mental health. We will be using our findings to help support better relationships in the future."

Local groups across the UK including employers, doctors' surgeries, schools and prisons will be working with the Mental Health Foundation to organise a series of events and exhibitions, to raise awareness of mental health issues during mental health action week.

Every year one in four people in the UK will experience some form of mental health problem.

Mental Health Action Week is an annual event, first started in the 1950s, which aims to raise the public's awareness of mental health problems, and how to look after their mental wellbeing.
