Mental Health Action Week 20-26 April 2003
News Release, 7 April 2003
The Mental Health Foundation is asking everyone to check out their work-life balance this Mental Health Action Week. According to the charity, the pressure of an increasingly demanding work culture in the UK is a huge challenge to the mental health of the general population.
Visitors to this website will be able to take part in a quiz to assess their work-life balance, get tips for managing work-life balance, interactive postcards to send to friends and recommendations for employers as well as individuals to improve mental health in the workplace. From 22 April they will also be able to download a summary of 'Whose Life is it Anyway?', a new research report into the effects of a poor work-life balance on mental health.
Nearly one in three employees currently has a mental health problem in any one year, and half of all lost working days are due to work-related stress. Recent dramatic rises in the number of people working long hours suggest that these problems are likely to increase.
Dr Andrew McCulloch, Chief Executive of the Mental Health Foundation said: “Despite all we hear about flexible work practices and the new family-friendly policies, the number of people working long hours keeps on rising. This is not simply an issue for parents - everyone must realise they need a proper balance to their lives for the sake of their mental health. Workers owe it to themselves to take the issue seriously.
Mental Health Action Week is designed to get people thinking about the issues that affect their mental health day-to-day, and work-related stress is a threat to the mental wellbeing of a great many people.”
