Postnatal depression guidelines

News Release, 7 February 2003

The Mental Health Foundation is issuing guidelines to help new mothers spot post natal depression and seek support. The move comes after recent publicity over Sadie Frost's experience of the condition.

Between 10 and 15 per cent of new mothers suffer from postnatal depression, yet the illness can go undiagnosed in many cases. The Mental Health Foundation's awareness raising drive aims to encourage mothers who don't realise that the condition is treatable get help.

Dr Andrew McCulloch, Chief Executive of the Mental Health Foundation says: "The birth of a new baby should be a time of joy yet all too often these feelings can be shrouded by depression, guilt and despair. Many new mothers suffer the unnecessary effects of postnatal depression because they can't get support or don't know that the condition is treatable."

"Many depressed mothers feel guilty that they can't cope. This can lead to tensions with family and friends and spiraling feelings of distress. It is important that friends and family spot the signs of postnatal depression and give support to help the mother overcome a serious and sometimes life-threatening illness."
