Online conference opens up debate on Mental Health for All

News Release, 12 November 2004

On Thursday 13 January, the Mental Health Foundation is to host an online conference on public mental health. Mental Health for All will provide an opportunity for a wide range of professionals and lay people to consider what research, policy and action is needed to put mental health and wellbeing at the heart of the public health agenda.

Mental health problems currently cost the UK economy an estimated £93 billion every year (1). By 2020 depression is expected to be the second most important illness worldwide (2).

Dr Andrew McCulloch, Chief Executive of the Mental Health Foundation said:

"We're very much looking forward to opening up this debate. Public health has been around for over 150 years. It's time for public mental health to be put on the agenda. UK policy is needed to enable people to better understand mental health and encourage them to look after it in the same way they do their physical health. We cannot go on trying to manage mental illness in a reactive way."

The online conference will enable people with an interest in the field, such as policy makers, health promotion practitioners, teachers, nurses, service users and mental health professionals to debate the importance of public mental health.
