NICE guidelines show significant shift in thinking but which way now for GPs?

News Release, 7 December 2004

The Mental Health Foundation welcomes the new NICE guidelines on the treatment and care of people with depression and anxiety. The recommendations are well intentioned and a progressive move forward.

On the day the guidelines were released, Dr Andrew McCulloch, Chief Executive of The Mental Health Foundation said:

"While the Charity is pleased that the guidelines will recommend psychological treatments as an alternative to anti-depressants, in reality investment is needed to provide comprehensive counselling and psychotherapy services to combat existing long waiting lists. Lots more research is also needed to explore the effectiveness of other non-medical treatments.

The Government also has a duty to educate society about the proven benefits of the alternatives to anti-depressants already available and their benefits. Until further progress is made, the situation is unlikely to change and we will continue to fail the millions of people who experience depression and anxiety in the UK. We simply cannot go on asking GPs to send people away for a lengthy wait."
