Mental Health Foundation launches Poster Campaign

Mental Health Action Week : Sunday 27 March – Saturday 2 April 2005

News Release, 22 February 2005

The Mental Health Foundation will be running a poster campaign across the UK this Mental Health Action Week, to raise awareness that exercise is one of the most effective ways to look after and improve your mental health..

The poster carries a simple focused message and suggests that exercise acts as a preventive measure against mild mental health problems such as anxiety and depression. The Foundation did not want to the image to concentrate on mental illness, but to carry a positive mental well-being message.

Dr Andrew McCulloch, Chief Executive of the Mental Health Foundation said:

" A wealth of evidence exists to show that exercise can have a positive effect upon a person’s mental health, but not enough people in the UK are aware of this. We want to spread the message as widely as possible and encourage people to exercise in some way – whether it be a run in the park, a game of frisbee or a gym workout.”

Exercise and mental health will be the central theme of Mental Health Action Week, with 2,000 community organisations displaying the posters and offering further information. The Week will mark the launch of a one-year campaign to increase the use of exercise on prescription as a treatment for mild or moderate depression.
