News Release, 23 March 2005
The Mental Health Foundation today welcomed the report of the Joint Committee on the Draft Mental Health Bill.
Speaking on the day of publication of the report (23 March 2005) Dr Andrew McCulloch, Chief Executive of the Mental Health Foundation said:
Mental health service users, nurses, psychiatrists, carers and campaigners have long said that plans laid out by the Government in successive Mental Health Bill drafts are outdated and unworkable.
Now a Parliamentary committee appointed to advise the Government has found the plans to be "fundamentally flawed", and has made firm recommendations that have been welcomed by those who have campaigned for so long.
The Government should now withdraw its discredited Bill. It has a once-in a generation opportunity to improve the lot of those who use mental health services, and to drive mental health care up the political and social agenda.
Service users, professional organisations and charities have been and remain very willing to work constructively on a better way forward for everyone.
