The Mental Health Foundation launches appeal to protect children against mental illness

News Release, 24 May 2005

The Mental Health Foundation has today launched an appeal to raise money for a project to help children of parents with a severe mental health problem.

60% of women with a serious mental illness have children under the age of 16. These children are at a much higher risk of developing a mental health problem than others but sadly, there are very few centres in the UK dedicated to their needs.

The Mental Health Foundation hopes its May appeal, which will be mailed to current donors, will raise over £26,000 for its Children of Parents with a Severe Mental Illness project. The money will be used to discover exactly how services can help children build resilience to their parents’ illnesses

Dr. Andrew McCulloch, Chief Executive of the Mental Health Foundation said:

“There is a need for increased awareness within the mental health system of the impact on children of parent’s mental health problems. Getting help to children as early as possible is key in preventing the development of problems later on in life. The money raised through our appeal will go a long way to develop services to support children and young people when they find themselves in such challenging circumstances.”
