Travelling Bursaries awarded by mental health charity

News Release, 31 October 2005

The Mental Health Foundation today announced those who have been successful in securing funds to research mental health services and projects in the UK and overseas. The travelling bursaries will send researchers to locations including the Occupied Palestinian Territories, the Australian outback and United States of America.

Among the eight winning projects are:

  • a clinical psychologist from the Maudsley Hospital, who will be visiting Sydney to learn about Cognitive Behavioural Therapy services offered to rural and remote families in Australia with a view to developing similar services in the UK
  • a team of mental health professionals from South Wales who will be researching mental health approaches and projects in the Occupied Palestinian Territories; and a group of service users from Middlesex, who will be sailing down the Somme to learn about mental health systems in France.

Bursaries to the value of £2,500 have been awarded to service users, staff working in mental health services, and individuals from the charity sector.

Andrew McCulloch, Chief Executive of the Mental Health Foundation says,

“The bursaries will stimulate the UK mental health sector, bringing in some much-needed fresh thinking from around the world. Great things are happening in mental health in other parts of the world and by learning how other services are being delivered successfully, we hope to improve service provision for people with mental health problems in the UK.”

Application forms for 2006 Travelling Bursaries will be available to download from the Mental Health Foundation’s website in May 2006. Visit www.mentalhealth.org.uk.
