Responding to the launch of the Children’s Plan, Andrew McCulloch, Chief Executive of the Mental Health Foundation, today said:
“We welcome the announcement of the Children’s Plan and the inclusion of emotional wellbeing and mental health. This is a major opportunity to improve the mental health of our young people.
“A review of Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services is crucial – at present, children and young people find these services unapproachable and difficult to access, and referrals by GP’s to them are falling. As a result, many young people’s mental health problems are being picked up too late – often in adulthood when their problems have become much more severe and are harder to treat.
“We are very encouraged that the new Child Health strategy is going to look at the role of mainstream and universal services in the promotion of emotional wellbeing and mental health for children and young people – this gives us the chance to deliver a truly joined up agenda.”
