News release: 16 January 2008
The Mental Health Foundation is offering a challenge for those with New Year fitness plans – an exhilarating trek through the mountains of Peru. Anyone can take part and the charity will even throw in a personal training plan to help get in shape for the trip!
The ten-day will begin in the ancient city of Cusco, former capital of the sun-worshipping Inca Empire. After several days trekking through green valleys and high mountain passes, participants will arrive at the World Heritage site of Machu Picchu.
Katie Jeffs, 23, from Oxfordshire, who took part in the 2007 trek said:
“The best thing for me was reaching the 4400 metre Huchayccassa Pass, the highest point on the trek. We had all trained so hard and with each other’s help we had achieved what we set out to do – and it was worth it!”
Celia Richardson, Director of Fundraising for the Mental Health Foundation, said:
“This is a fabulous challenge for anyone wanting to get fit in 2008, while helping a very good cause. Plus, exercise is a fantastic way to look after your mental, as well as physical health. All money raised will go to help us improve the lives of the 1 in 4 people who have a mental health problem, their friends and families.”
The ten-day trip takes place from 24th October – 2nd November 2008. Participants are required to pay a registration fee of £349 and raise a minimum fee of £2650 in sponsorship money. All travel, accommodation, refreshments, guides and medical support are included.
