Dr Mike Shooter CBE has been appointed chair of the Mental Health Foundation, after the retirement of David Sachon. He brings a wealth of experience to the position, as a child and adolescent psychiatrist practicing in South Wales and also as immediate past president of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
In addition to his 25 years as a psychiatrist, Dr Shooter has also worked as a journalist and teacher. On joining the Foundation, he said: “It’s fantastic to be involved with this charity and its vital work to improve the mental health of everyone.”
Dr Andrew McCulloch, Chief Executive of the Foundation, said: “We couldn’t hope for a better leader on the board than Dr Shooter. He understands the urgent need to prioritise mental health at a national level.”
In addition to his new position at the Mental Health Foundation, Dr Shooter is also chairman of Young Minds and Children-in-Wales.
He is also a trustee of the National Children’s Bureau and Vice-president of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy.
