News release: 31 January 2008
Responding to the Mental Health Act Commission report, “Risk, Rights, Recovery”, Moira Fraser, Head of Policy at the Mental Health Foundation, said:
“It is shameful that some mental health wards remain unfit settings in which people feel vulnerable and scared. Steps clearly need to be taken to make wards safer places, especially for children and older people who find themselves inappropriately placed.
“We need to see a change in attitude among the country’s decision makers towards those who experience severe mental illness – psychiatric wards are supposed to be environments in which people go to for care, treatment and to recover, but often that is not the case – sadly, individuals often want to avoid in-patient units.”
