Long-term physical conditions and mental health

This is a new area of policy work for the Mental Health Foundation. It focuses on individuals who have long term chronic physical conditions and looks at the impact on their mental health. We want to ensure that non-mental health services can respond to these needs.
  • About 50% of people who have a heart attack go on to experience significant symptoms of depression or anxiety.

  • People with diabetes also have an increased chance of developing depression.

Poor mental health means it is much more difficult to recover good physical health. However, people often don't get the help and support they need to prevent or cope with this.

In addition, people with long term mental health problems often do not get the physical care they need and have an increased chance of developing illnesses such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes.

The Mental Health Foundation is working in partnership with physical health organisations and the Long Term Conditions Alliance to raise awareness of this issue, to ensure psychological support is provided to people with physical health problems if it's needed.

We will also be working to ensure these issues are included in training for healthcare professionals.

We want you to have your say on policy work including long-term physical conditions and mental health. By providing your contact details, we will be able to:
