Public Mental Health

Public mental health is a priority area for the Mental Health Foundation. It has been described as the art, science and politics of creating a mentally healthy society.

The Mental Health Foundation defines public mental health as:

  • How individuals, families, organisations and communities think and feel

  • The factors that influence how we think and feel, individually and collectively

  • The impact that this has on overall health and well being

The Mental Health Foundation has undertaken a number of public mental health campaigns in the recent past, including:

We continue to have a programme of work that aims to improve the mental health and well being of the general population and to bring issues relating to mental health into the mainstream. This  contributes to the lessening of stigma and prejudice regarding both mental health and mental illness.

We want you to have your say on policy work including public mental health. By providing your contact details, we will be able to:

  • inform you of which policy work subjects we are concentrating on

  • invite you to feed in your opinions and experiences to help inform our policy work

  • build up a database of people who are interested in contributing their views on policy and mental health
